About the books
A Promise to Grow was created with the help of The Virginia Humanities and City of Promise to honor the Westhaven community. The story follows a young boy who dreams of his future while doing good deeds in his neighborhood. The book also highlights the history of Vinegar Hill, a historically Black neighborhood destroyed by the city in 1965, with a child-friendly foreword written in rhyme. Made possible through a grant from the WK Kellogg Foundation, A Promise to Grow celebrates the strength and legacy of this vibrant community.
The Girl Who Carried Too Much Stuff is the story of a little girl who loves to collect things—so much that she gathers them all up and carries them with her wherever she goes! But soon, she discovers that lugging around all that “stuff” makes life a lot more difficult. This story explores the value of letting go to make room for what really matters. It sparks thoughtful reflection on what we truly need to carry through life.
Dad is Acting Strange is a heartwarming story about the changes that happen between parents and their growing kids. In this tale, a young girl starts to notice that her dad seems a little different as she enters her pre-teen years—strange, even! With humor and understanding, this book explores the ups and downs of growing up and how the bond between a father and daughter can shift, yet remain as strong as ever. Perfect for kids navigating the “strange” stages of life!
What About Me? is a charming story about a little sister who just wants to join in on the fun her older sisters are having. But when they leave her out, she discovers something amazing—just because you’re alone doesn’t mean you have to feel lonely! This book is all about empowerment, finding joy in your own company, and realizing that sometimes, the best adventures are the ones you create for yourself.
